Mad Men Retro-Perspective S6:E4



Welcome back! In this week's Mad Men Retro-Perspective, we'll be continuing to follow along with Mad Men Replay. So be sure to do a quick scan of the notes, questions, and fun facts about this episode, then pour yourself a (strong) cocktail and join the live-tweet!

In a show all about adultery, this episode is all about adultery. We've seen Don cavort with a variety of women over the years, and most of those affairs occurred while he was married. Last season was literally the only season in which Don only had one sexual partner (and you see how that turned out). 

So what makes this episode notable? Every storyline, even Peggy's, deals with disloyalty and breaking a bond. We have Don cheating with Sylvia, Megan "cheating" with her co-star, Scarlett cheating with Dawn, Kate cheating on her husband, Don cheating on Beans (his name is Raymond, but Beans is better), Peggy cheating on her friendship with Stan...the list goes on. 

Why does this matter? The consequences are different for everyone. So as you watch, take note of how each character's "adultery" affects them by the end of the episode. Observe where the gap is narrowing when it comes to gender equality...and where it isn't. You know where the characters end up at the end of the season. How does this episode get them there?

S6:E4 To Have and To Hold



  • What did you think of Pete's awkward offer of his apartment for Don? Why do you think he does things like that? What does it tell you about the way Pete views himself and his relationship to Don (even after all these years)?
  • How is Dawn different from Don's other secretaries? (Don't be crass, you goon.) How is she similar? Judging by her scenes with her friend, what do you think her goals are? How do these differ from Joan's in the Sterling Cooper days?
  • Is it just me, or has the chemistry between Don and Sylvia increased since the last episode? Do you think we're witnessing the effects of their agreement to keep things simple and not fall in love? Knowing how Sylvia later ends the affair, how would you say each of them do, holding up that agreement?
  • What do you think about Joan's friend, Kate? And my god, how great would it be to be close personal friends with Joan?
  • How does this new "neurotic" Ken Cosgrove compare to the Kenny we met at the beginning of the series? Would you say he is becoming more fleshed out, or is he being used as a foil to other characters, as he has been for most of the series (Pete particularly)?
  • What exactly do you think is going on between Harry and Scarlett?
  • What was your reaction when Arlene told Megan she was going to have a love scene? Did you think about Don, or did it take you a second?
  • When Arlene said they should all go to dinner to help make Don "comfortable", did anyone else think, "Oh shit, that's the swinger scene"?
  • How likable do you find Megan? What would you say are her defining qualities? How do these complement Don's? Why do you think their marriage doesn't generally work?
  • How did you like the interaction between Joan and Meredith? Did it make you think of a plane crash?
  • Do you think the Broadway Joe approach is a good strategy for Dow? Just curious.
  • What do you think about Harry's quality of work? Do you think his demands for advancement are reasonable? How does this scenario compare to Season 2, when he was first promoted to the Head of the Television Department? Why do you think Roger and Bert are unwilling to make him a partner?
  • Was Joan being too harsh when she fired Scarlett? Do you think everyone at SCDP still treats Joan like a secretary, or is that just her emotional reaction to Harry undermining her authority?
  • Which was the better Ketchup pitch, Don's or Peggy's? Why?
  • Do you think Don ever brushes his damned teeth before he crawls back into bed with Megan after sleeping with Sylvia?
  • Should Megan have kept the love scene a secret from Don? Would he have known? What would Betty have done? What is the best approach when dealing with Don?



  • As a Tom and Lorenzo convert, I find it VERY difficult to unsee all of the blue and green, and it's especially obvious in this episode: Pete's apartment (down to all three of their suits), Joan and Dawn when Scarlett gets fired, and Scarlett and Harry. Oddly enough, "cheating" is involved in all three of these examples: Don and Pete secretly meet with Ketchup behind Beans' back in Pete's love-pad (and Ketchup makes a rather overt reference to his own adultery), Dawn and Scarlett get caught in a liaison behind Joan's back, and Harry and Scarlett are OBVIOUSLY sleeping together ("Harry has great ideas." "We ARE attached."). See what I mean?
  • Kate was double-double-timing: she went out in the city with Joan intending to cheat on her husband, and she was in the city to meet with Avon without Mary Kay's knowledge.
  • Both Peggy and Megan are tossing around Don's token phrases. Peggy uses his favorite "Change the conversation" line during her Heinz pitch (much to Don's chagrin), and Megan (unknowingly) throws out that she could have kept the love scene from him and it would have been like "it never happened".
  • More and more smoking Megan. Even Arlene, the not-so-subtle-swinger lady made a comment!
  • We had three ladies in black and white this episode: Sylvia in the elevator with Don, Megan in her maid's costume, and Joan the day she gave Dawn her new responsibilities. 
  • In the scene Kate and Joan have dinner with Joan's mom, Joan says, "You should come more often. Turns out someone is proud of me." This very closely mirrors the scene in S2 when Father Gill has Sunday dinner at Anita's house and Peggy says, "I'm glad you're here, Father. I didn't know they knew what I do."
  • Ketchup may have been the client in this episode, but Harry, Stan, and Ted were all in mustard.
  • Don has always been extremely hypocritical when it comes to jealousy and his wives. Remember that time he was SO UPSET about Betty letting that AC salesman in the house even though he started sleeping with Rachel the episode before? Yeah.
  • Don makes an joke about how they would have "bask(ed) in the afterglow" if he and Megan had taken up Mel and Arlene's offer, probably meaning that they would have woken up hungover with makeup smeared all over their faces. Joan and Kate actually DO wake up the next morning hungover with makeup smeared all over their faces. 
  • Joan tells Kate she can go home now, and she'll "find everything right where it belongs". This is very close to the advice Carla gives Betty in S2 when she kicks Don out of the house. 
  • Shoutout to Scarlett's boots! She must have seen that cute photographer's assistant wearing them in E1 and bought a pair.
  • While the Broadway Joe show never came to fruition in real life, Joe Namath did have a talk show. Watch here to see why it only lasted one season. I mean, really.

Mad Men Retro-Perspective: S6:E3


Welcome back! Don't read this if you haven't seen all of the Mad Men episodes available. Just saying.


This is probably one of my least favorite Mad Men episodes of all times. That probably has to do with my general lack of enthusiasm for Sylvia Rosen, and this is the first time we get a defining look at her character. There's a lot going on in terms of dynamics in this episode, so keep an eye out for adultery. 

Some people may differ with this assessment, but if there's one theme this episode, it's prostitution. 

And with that, let's watch... 

S6:E3 The Collaborators


Judging by what you knew of the Campbell marriage, did you ever expect them to split? Judging by the beginning of this episode, with Pete and Trudy entertaining other couples, how surprising did you find it that they spilt?

Compare Trudy's flirting to Pete's. Do you think she has ever or would ever cheat on Pete? Please recall the situation with her ex, Charlie in Season 1. Do you think this Trudy would have handled the situation differently?

What do you think triggered Don to go back upstairs and sleep with Sylvia the morning he caught her arguing with Arnie in the hallway? Why do you think he gave her the money? How do you think she interpreted this action?

Now that you've seen a season worth of Sylvia and are taking a look back, what do you make of her character? What would you call her reaction to Megan's miscarriage? Harsh? Fair? How would her reaction have differed if she wasn't sleeping with Megan's husband?

How do Don and Sylvia differ in the way they view their relationship?

How awesome is Peggy's secretary? Considering her tendency to copycat Don, do you think her choice to hire a black secretary was influenced by his decision to hire Dawn?

Compare the way Peggy deals with the copywriters to how Don dealt with the creative department at SC. Is she being too harsh? Would anyone on that staff have ever pranked Don the way they did Peggy in this episode?

What exactly do you think motivates Brenda to sleep with Pete? What can we assess about a woman who falls for the line, "It's been known to get hot"?

Jesus, does Heinz Baked Beans EVER stop being such a pain in the ass?

Why do you think the characters mention maids so many times this season? Does it have anything to do with Megan playing a maid on TV? What purpose does this serve?

What would Betty's reaction be to Megan's feelings about her pregnancy? Recall that Betty went riding immediately after learning she was pregnant in S3:E13, despite the doctor's advice to avoid it. Do you think she would have felt the sort of relief Megan does in this episode if she had miscarried and never had Gene? How might her marriage/divorce with Don have turned out differently?

How do you think Don's reaction to Joan's liaison has been influenced by his upbringing in the brothel?

How different is Peggy's interaction at CGC different from her experiences at SC and SCDP? In the past, was she part of the group as a whole in general? Is this new interaction shocking, in other words?

 Compare Don's capabilities in regard to his infidelities with Pete's. How are these showcased in this episode?

How well have the writers handled the Don/Sylvia affair? Do you consider it as well written or well developed as his other affairs?

How did you react to the scene in which Don seduces Sylvia with rough words over dinner? Do you recall Don ever having to seduce anyone? How does the dynamic between Don and other women usually go?

Do you think Don and Betty ever discussed whether they wanted to have children the way Don and Megan (sort of ) did? How different are the two marriages so far? How similar?

How have Don's pitches to clients been this season so far? Do you think they are a sign of the disastrous Hershey's pitch to come? If you could sketch an arc of the quality of Don's work over the course of the series, where does this season fall?


What do you think Don gained by growing up in the brothel (other than a few complexes)? What is the significance of the song "Just a Gigolo" playing at the end of the episode?



  • Green and blue is a major color scheme in this episode, and continues over the course of the season. A few examples: Pete's apartment/love den is decorated with green and blue glass screens, Sylvia and Megan are wearing blue and green respectively when Megan talks about her miscarriage, Trudy is dressed in green and framed against blue curtains on the morning she confronts Pete, and Peggy and Ted are in green and blue when they discuss going after Heinz Ketchup. Tom and Lorenzo speculate that green and blue signals adultery this season (in addition to being a very hot color combo during this period). Check out some of their analysis here and here
  • We've never seen Megan smoke until this season, and this is the first episode it's noticeable.
  • Peggy seems to blend right into her new position at CGC: her purple and blue ensemble in the scene she tries to go easy on the writers is the exact same colors as the building behind her, but the background is shrouded in horizontal blinds. As we learn in this episode, she's having a hard time fitting in, despite her skill and talent.
  • Despite this, Peggy has developed a new power color this season: purple, which happens to be the exact opposite on the color wheel from her original mustard yellow. There was a hint of this last season, when she gave Don her notice.
  • Pete grabbed a baseball bat when he heard Brenda screaming through the neighborhood. Really, Pete? You couldn't take Lane Pryce in a fistfight, but you think you can handle a baseball bat? You do you, boo.
  • Did anyone else see that killer teal damask in the Campbell house? Killer!
  • Megan and Sylvia are wearing almost the same shade of light blue on the night Don has dinner with Sylvia alone.
  • The Campbells have the same yellow phone Peggy had in her single-gal-in-Brooklyn apartment in Season 2.
  • Megan says she feels "so shitty" because of her relief that she doesn't have to make a decision about her pregnancy, which she feels is a betrayal of her marriage. Don uses this same phrase to describe how Sylvia feels about their affair up to the point he takes off her dress.
  • Don makes a sarcastic comment about used cars sales during the Jaguar meeting, but we all know that Don himself once sold used cars ( though probably not as greasily as Herb, bot even counting the Brylcreem).
  • Don wouldn't shake Herb's hand when he came in to discuss his idea, but he sure as HELL shook it after the meeting with the Jaguar corporate honchos.
  • Roger is sporting his blue accent with his grey suit again...a sign of things to come?
  • Pete still has his picture of Trudy on his desk from Season 1.
  • Bob Benson calling Pete "chief" is very reminiscent of Pete calling Don "buddy" in S1:E2, when Don says he doesn't want to wake up pregnant. Pretty sure Pete feels the same.
  • Don tells the madam in last season that he "grew up in a place like this". Now we know it's true!

Mad Men Retro-Perspective S6:E1+2


Welcome back to my Mad Men Retro-Perspective! As you may have read in the past, this is a viewing guide designed for people who have already seen all of Mad Men and are re-watching it. If you are one such person, you may enjoy reading this along with Mad Men Replay.

I previously covered the first two episodes of Season 1, which is a great frame for what I'll now be jumping ahead to: Season 6! That's right, Season 7 is around the corner, so what better way to gear up than to do a little analysis of the most recent season?


BAM, it's 1967. I have to say, after watching seasons 1-3 so recently this change is far more startling than I would have guessed. Obviously fashion and music have morphed radically since the early sixties, but there is also a clear difference in social structure and even the hints of counterculture in this first episode, which is just a taste of the wild things to come in Season 6.

But I'm not really interested in talking about this, as every Mad Men review on the internet talks about the social changes of the 60s. More interesting to me is the change we see in the characters. (Of course!)

So as you watch this episode (which is really parts 1 and 2 of the Doorway), I recommend really thinking back to those early Sterling Cooper days. (If you can even remember them!) I'm talking about Peggy with a ponytail (and Pete with a full head of hair for that matter), Sally as a little girl who wants to go riding with her petulant mother, Pre-Rachel-Bobbie-Suzanne-Faye-Megan Don, Ken Cosgrove tackling Allison at an office party and looking at her (blue) panties, Harry Crane running out of a meeting because Don's pitch about a slide projector is too difficult to reconcile with the emotional happenings in his personal life, Bobby #1-3, the Original Skinny Betty, Roger married to Mona, no Baby Gene, Limited Edition Italian Betty, Don-Doesn't-Approve-of-My Bathing-Suit Betty, My-People-Are-Nordic-Betty, Megan in diapers-- the list goes on!

Many things have changed around these characters, and most of them have faced changed roles in the office and their personal lives, but think about how their experiences have affected their personalities and relationships. I noticed some changes I didn't catch the first time around, and I suspect you will too now that you're looking for them.

S6:E1+2 The Doorway


1) The last time we saw Don, he was walking away from Megan's big break on a commercial set, and right into a bar, where a young lady asked if he was "alone". Judging by Don and Megan's interaction on vacation, what do you think his answer was? Was this what you expected? How happy do you think they are at the beginning of this season? 

2) What do you think the significance of Don's presence at the soldier's wedding? Don didn't have "any people" at his wedding to Betty; do you think that affected his decision to give the bride away, or is it something else?

3) How did the heart attack transition scene work for you the second time around? 

4) Doesn't Betty sound like a woman much older than her age (35)? Do you think she ever has conversations with Sally similar to the one she has with Sandy? What is your impression of Sandy? Does she have anything in common with Betty? Does Betty's heart-to-heart with her remind you of her relationship (or one might say "one time fling") with Glen?

5) But seriously, is Kerris Lilla Dorsey (Sandy) a decent actor? Because I'm just not sure.

6) What's your take on Betty's rape comments/jokes?

7) How would you define the difference between 1967 Peggy and 1960 Peggy? What pops out the most to you about her conversation with Burt Peterson on the phone?

8) Now that you know about Don and Sylvia, what do you think of Don's relationship with Arnie? How would you define the difference between their philosophies on life?

9) Didn't Roger sound like Barney Stinson when he said, "More like irritated!" during therapy? What do you think about his doors theory? 

10) Now that you know about Bob Benson's past, what do you think about his strategy to get ahead? Does he remind you of young Don, buttering up Roger? Is he meant to? How did you react to Ken Cosgrove berating him?

11) What did you think of Pete's sassy commentary to Don? How have Pete's feelings toward Don changed over the years?

12) What exactly was Don's experience? What clues do you have about it from seeing his trip to Hawaii?

13) What did you make of Don's thoughts on love? Do you remember that this same man called love something invented "by guys like me to sell nylons"? What experiences in his life have led to this change in perspective? Do you think it's Megan, or something else?

14) How would you compare Peggy's explanation of advertising to Koss to Don's famous Belle Jolie "Jesus" speech? Do you consider one to be a better approach? What does it say about Peggy?

15) What does the lighter make Don feel? Is it significant that he is looking down at it in a scene where someone asks him to be himself? Does Don know how to do that?

16) Why does Roger call his mother's funeral "his"? 

17) Do you think Don has legitimate fears about Megan becoming a "lying, cheating whore"? Do you think that's how he still views Betty?

18) What did you think was in that jar when Roger first pulled it out?

19) What is the significance of Don hearing the ocean?

20) Why do you think Betty went looking for Sandy in the city? Would she have done that when she was married to Don? Why does she leave the violin?

21) Do you think Peggy's rough treatment of the copywriters is innate or is it something she learned from Don?

22) Why did Betty dye her hair?

23) What did you think of Don's Royal Hawaiian pitch? Did it make you think of suicide? 

24) Looking back, is it surprising that Peggy and Ted have an affair? How do you think they feel about each other in this episode?

25) Did you suspect that Don and Sylvia were sleeping together or did the flirty neighbor lady throw you off? Were you surprised when Don said that he wanted to "stop doing this"? Why do you think it takes Sylvia to break it off? Do you think her hold on him is purely because she reminds him of a prostitute he once knew?


  • This episode is littered with hot and cold imagery, especially as we transition from Hawaii to winter in New York. 
  • It's also worth noting that Megan wears all light, bright, intense tones of purple and blue while she's in Hawaii, while in NYC her clothes are noticeably muted, and continue to be so throughout the season. 
  • Don doesn't speak a word until almost 8 minutes into the episode. 
  • The Hawaii-ifed tune playing when Megan is dancing on stage at the hotel is "The Stripper", a classic burlesque song. (I had to point that one out!)
  • Betty is apparently a horrible driver. Don always hated her driving, remember?
  • Roger talks a lot about doors in his therapy session, and he once told Don, "When god closes a door, her opens a dress."
  • The creative department is smoking pot somewhat openly, but puts it away when Don walks into the office. In S1:E2, Paul said his friend worked for an agency where the writers smoke all day and play darts...That was seven years ago! It's probably safe to say he was full of shit. 
  • Did you notice Pete's hairline? Of course you did. Don made a premonition in S1:E1 that Pete would end up a "middle aged executive with a little bit of hair that women go home with out of pity". 
  • Roger was wearing his signature grey suit, with blue accents mixed in. Pete was wearing his signature blue suit with grey accents mixed in. 
  • There was a lot of emphasis on photography in this episode: Megan taking a picture of Don at the wedding, photos of the partners at the office, Don giving Arnie a camera, and Megan sharing the photos of their vacation to the neighbors. 
  • Arnie says he told Sylvia to "keep it in the building"-- ouch.
  • Don and Megan sleep on the opposite sides that he and Betty traditionally did. He once told Betty in Italy that he liked sleeping on her side of the bed. 
  • Don embarrasses himself at the funeral by getting drunk and vomiting, kinda like Roger once did in S1:E7 after several rounds of oysters and martinis. 
  • With so much darkness and death imagery, culminating in Don's "suicide" pitch for Royal Hawaiian, one has to wonder if Dr. Guttman (the curt German researcher from S1) wasn't right about society's "death wish", which she suggests as a strategy for Lucky Strike in the very first episode. 
  • Keep an eye out for Sylvia in her signature black...as Tom and Lorenzo have pointed out, she dresses like a "sexy nun", a major nod to her Catholic faith.

Mad Men Retro-Perspective S1:E2

Welcome back to Mad Men Retro-Perspective! Each week, I view an episode of Mad Men from a past season, provide some Notes on the context and themes, ask a bunch of annoying Questions, and then post a collection of fun things I noticed in the episode and ask Did You Catch That?

S1:E2 Ladies Room

During my re-watch, I realized this is one of my favorite episodes of Season 1, mainly because, as implied in its name, it's all about the ladies. Don spends the entire episode asking himself and all of the men in his life, "What do women want?", and unsurprisingly, ends up deducing that women just want "any excuse to get closer". If he had thought a little harder, maybe he would have come up with something other than this trite idea that all women depend on male attention. Maybe he should have asked an actual woman, since there are no shortage great female characters on this show. 

We were already introduced to Joan and Peggy in Episode 1, as well as his current mistress Midge and his future mistress Rachel, but what of Betty, arguably one of the most controversial characters on the show and a major source of conflict in Don's life? We meet Betty at the end of Episode one, waking from a peaceful slumber to welcome home her husband, the conquering hero, and watching over him as he says goodnight to their children. This episode is largely about defining who Betty is and identifying what will become the ongoing issue in her life over the course of the series: her dissatisfaction with the life she leads and the inability to fix it. Who better to juxtapose this character with in this episode than Peggy, who, unlike Betty, repeatedly strives to overcome her dissatisfaction through her own ambition. 

Additionally, the stories of both Betty and Peggy are told through the same lens: male attention. Betty, alone in the suburbs, is starving for Don's presence and participation in her life, and as a result has nervous hand tremors that cause her to crash her car. Peggy, on the other hand, suffers from what she considers too much male attention in the office, and (uncharacteristically) allows it to affect the quality of her work.

Interestingly, the synopsis for this episode makes no mention of Betty other than as a "complication" in Don's life. 


  1. What did you think of Roger and Mona's marriage when you first watched this episode? Does it seem different to you now that you've seen him married to someone else?
  2. What do you think of Mona herself? How do you interpret her silent reaction to Betty telling her that her mother just died? Is the woman in this episode the same as the one we see in Season 3 when Roger has remarried and Margaret is planning her wedding?
  3. What do you think of Roger's statement that he can't wait until his daughter is another man's problem now that Margaret is married and they are often at odds? Do you think he feels the same way?
  4. What were your initial impressions of Betty when you first watched this scene? Do you think she is meant to be portrayed as a sympathetic character? Is she sympathetic at this point? When does she, if ever, become unsympathetic in your eyes?
  5. Betty says that she "knows better than to ask" about Don and his childhood and/or past. How do you think this played out early in their marriage? Do you think it was stupid of Betty to not get to know Don before she married him?
  6. Betty later says she always thought Don was a football star who hated his father. What was your picture of Don's childhood when you first watched the series? Did Don seem to fit into the life he created for himself, or did he seem, as he does to Rachel, to know what it's like to be on the outside of something?
  7. When Don mentions Betty to Midge, she says it makes her feel "cruel". Do you think Don feels any guilt over his affair with Midge?
  8. Who do you think gave Midge her television?
  9. Why do you think Don resists Betty's suggestion that she tries visiting a psychiatrist so vehemently? Do you think he is threatened by the idea? For Betty or himself?
  10. What do you think of Don asking Betty is she is happy with her life? Do you think her is bullying her, or is he truly befuddled? Do you think Don's perception of happiness is affected by his line of work? How might that apply to Betty's situation?
  11. What do you make of Paul Kinsey's attempt to seduce Peggy? Do you think he really ever liked her at all or was he acting in response to the wager Ken and Dale mention at lunch?
  12. Why do you think Paul told Peggy about female copywriters? Do you think he was acting sincerely? Knowing Paul, do you think he'd ever do this if he could imagine she would later trump him creatively when they work side by side?
  13. Why do you think Don chose to give Betty the watch?
  14. Were you surprised that Betty then started talking about the "what ifs" regarding her accident? Did you feel that she was being genuine? Knowing how she is later in the series, do you think she was being manipulative, or is this Season 1 Betty too naïve for that behavior? When does she stop being that way?
  15. Where do you think Midge "spent the night abroad"? Why do you think the writers made her lose her key at all? Was it necessary? Does it serve another purpose in the grand scheme of her character?
  16. Do you think it's coincidental that Don comes up with the line for Right Guard when he's with Midge? What do you think this says about their relationship verses Don's marriage?
  17. How do you feel about Joan's advice to Peggy? What other occasions has Peggy taken Joan's advice and put it into practice? How has it worked out for her?
  18. What do you think Betty was expecting when she went to see the psychiatrist? Does Betty's session live up to her expectations? She mentions to Henry later on that she once saw a psychiatrist. What do you think she took away from the experience?
  19. Betty says to her psychiatrist that her mother taught her it's not polite to talk about oneself. Don says something very similar to this while they are at dinner with Roger and Mona. Is she being sincere, or do you think she is just echoing Don's excuse for not opening up?
  20. What do you think of the psychiatrist's characterization of Betty as "a very anxious young woman"? Is it accurate? How do you think that same doctor would characterize her by the end of Season 6?
  • Don's kids are watching the same show Midge mentioned to him before throwing her TV set out the window, People Are Funny.
  • In the first episode, the Drapers' famous teal velvet headboard his missing. This episode marks its debut!
  • Speaking of the Draper bed, did you notice after they (presumably) have sex, Don ends up on Betty's usual side of the bed while she is wondering who her husband is?
  • Roger drinks whiskey while he's in Don's office, but is normally a vodka drinker. Roger also, despite how "comfortable" he claims he is with his mind, is one of the only characters who later ends up in a psychiatrist's office.
  • Both Peggy and Midge remark on the scent of the men around them, while Don is asking himself what women want and fishing around for the Right Guard deodorant slogan.
  • The ladies room is an ongoing theme in this episode. Betty shares some personal time with Mona in the restaurant, Peggy and Joan find Bridget crying in the office, and Peggy later returns there to attempt to cry, presumably over Pete, only to find no tears. Peggy finds herself in the ladies room twice once again in S4:E7, the Suitcase. The first time, she shares awkward conversation with Megan and Trudy, and later returns to cry over Don's harsh criticism of her ambition.

Don Draper's Future

Today, I read an article a friend posted on Facebook titled, "Where Don Draper Ends, D.B. Cooper Begins". The author postulates that Don Draper may be a model, or indeed the figure, behind famed airplane hijacker Dan Cooper, whose 1971 case is still unsolved.

Not sure if I buy into this completely, but in broad strokes, it speaks volumes. It tackles the question every die hard and casual Mad Men fan has been asking increasingly with each step closer to the end of the series: what will happen to Don Draper? I'm not saying this article has all the answers (although she does make some really compelling points, especially about the prevalence of airplanes throughout the series), but it has set my wheels to turning.

I think the key is when the author asks, "What makes someone do something like that?"

I think we all want to examine Don's past to find out where he ends up. The thing is that taking evidence from the past and looking forward creates a fantasy future, even though we have the capability to create more grounded reality as people who actually live in that future. Lately I've been more interested in thinking about people I know who lived through this era and where they've ended up. With this perspective, it isn't hard to imagine Don as a washed up, alcoholic old man living in some hideous wood paneled ranch house in Florida, lucky if he gets a phone call from his kids on Christmas.

I think we've all known people like this, probably as an acquaintance or awkward, out of touch family member. For me, at 21 years old, this is the most relevant way to think about Mad Men-- do I know these people? Is my grandmother Betty Draper? Did my mom date Bobby Draper? Is Megan my hippy lesbian neighbor?

I think this one of the most compelling things about the show. It's not a fairy tale, it isn't as fictional as we'd like to believe. The world Weiner and Co have produced is continuous with the one we live in, even if it's not contemporary.

I think it would be awesome if Don turned out to be a notorious hijacker who was never caught, indeed, who never really existed. However, I think the beauty of the series (while heartbreaking) is that nothing like that will ever happen to these characters.

The real question is, will we be satisfied with what does happen to them?

The Lovely Trudy Campbell


For the first few seasons of Mad Men, I really pined for a brunette character with great style to stick around on the show long enough to emulate. Rachel and Midge came and went, and while Peggy is a complete badass, her fashion sense didn't kick in until around the third season, and she still makes some occasional missteps.


It wasn't until season four, when Peggy and super arrogant (but really good looking) freelancer Joey learn that Trudy Campbell is having a baby that I realized...the elusive brunette style icon I've been looking for was there all the time!

As Joey says, "I would get her so pregnant."
I'll be honest. Trudy Campbell was probably my least favorite female character on Mad Men through my first and second viewings. (And she was only eclipsed as least favorite character overall by her ridiculous child of a husband, Pete.) I found her social climbing ambition a little overwhelming and her constant whining about not being knocked up annoying as hell. BUT in all reality, she is awesome. Intelligent, glamorous, quick thinking, immaculate, level headed, loyal, and goddamn it, she wears the greatest hats. (And Allison Brie is really. Really. Beautiful.)

So even though we now have Megan, who is amazingly stylish, you know you can always look to Mad Men's original brunette style maven for inspiration. Even if she does have extremely questionable taste in lingerie.

Things You Should Know Before You Get Blunt Bangs

Let me tell you something about blunt bangs.
Blunt bangs are the world's oldest bangs. They're straightforward and honest. The first woman who decided to spruce up her 'do, whoever she may have been, gave herself some blunt bangs. I promise.

This means several things:

1) They've stuck around for a reason. They are super versatile, and anyone who says otherwise is full of crap. You can wear them straightened, curly, bouncy, short, long, piecey, swept to the side, pinned back, teased up...plus, they add flavor and form to up-dos and ponytails, which is great if you, like me, just wanna tie your hair back sometimes in a messy bun but hate a big bare forehead. You could say that they are a little more high-maintenance than not having bangs, but in my experience, the ratio of looking awesome to effort is considerably better.

2) They are simple to cut. Of course, you can get a stylist to do it for you, or you could spend an hour watching some Youtube videos and get some instant gratification. (But only if you're sober.) The nicest thing is that once you cut them yourself, you can maintain them yourself.

3) I also have to say that people always told me that growing out blunt bangs is a really irritating process, but I've found just the opposite. I loved when they just grazed my eyebrows, but I've found that they make all kinds of fun and interesting shapes as they grow.

4) Also, if you're looking to replicate Joan Holloway bangs, this is the best way. Although her look has changed from season to season ever so slightly, through a thorough examination of her bangs, I've determined that they are long blunt bangs, just styled differently. I realize that not everyone's life revolves around Mad Men, but I know that I searched for the best way to achieve a Joan style bouffant on a regular basis, and this is the best way, no matter what length hair you have.

5) Side-swept bangs are trivial in comparison. In a competition of side-swept vs. blunt, side-swepts are  extremely limited, trickier to maintain, and frankly, look a little 2007.

Obviously, I'm not recommending blunt bangs to you personally, because I don't know what your hair texture is or how much time you're willing to spend getting used to styling them or how handy you are with scissors. I do know that blunt bangs were a really great decision for me, and I fully support the decision to try something new.

But if it ends disastrously, don't look at me.
